I have hiked the Stairway to Heaven Trail on Oahu, Hawaii and I have several friends who hike it regularly. The city of Honolulu spent almost a million dollars repairing the stairs and was considering re-opening the stairs in 2002 but resident complaints and safety concerns halted the re-opening and the stairs have been closed ever since. The stairs were then opened to the public until 1987 when they were deemed unsafe because of disrepair. The Moanalua Trail, is a 6-mile route down that would help you avoid the guards but you would also miss the views of the stairway on the way down and it would take 3-4 times as long. Beach parks and coastal parks may be used for direct access to and from the ocean in order to engage in exercise, fishing and gathering food.

I tried he stairs a couple of days ago and had trouble with the locals and police, ended up going the back way. It took us less than two hours to make it to the beginning of the stairs. After a short wait, the sky began to glow a pale blue, then a purple, and all of a sudden the sun attempted to break through the haze.

In order to play in any AVP sanctioned event, you must be an AVP Member. I usually go twice a year and try a new place/hike evertime.
It isn’t up to you to decide which laws you should obey or not obey. haha! They have already put up high fences on access points reported online and we were only able to get in through one of the drainage ditches, and that was challenging.

Why do I recommend this hostel/hotel: This is the perfect hotel if you want location but are willing to sacrifice a pool and some luxury items to save up to $200 per night. A number of the stairs are loose and each step had to be taken with that in mind.

One of the largest bays on Kauaʻi’s north shore and lined with nearly 2 miles of beach, Hanalei Bay provides ample space for beachgoers to lay out their towels, whether near the iconic Hanalei Pier—you’ll want to jump off of this idyllic structure at least once during your visit—or away from the crowds at the opposite end of the bay.
