Spadina Avenue – which historically was pronounced Spadeena – was named for a house on top of a hill, honouring an Ojibwa word meaning high place. It was truly a military road, running as straight as an arrow from York to Holland Landing. This former dirt highway running from Lake Ontario to Holland Marsh, named after a friend of Governor Simcoe, eventually connected a string of towns and villages to the provincial capital. He named his store after Laura Secord, the Canadian heroine who was a symbol of courage, devotion, and loyalty. They settled on land between Sheppard and Finch, east of Yonge, in 1797, and then built a sawmill on the Don River near Finch and Bayview in 1819. Though Dundas and Yonge Streets were built with military goals in mind, they, like many other early colonization roads, helped to promote new settlement of lands claimed from local First Nations.
